How to Absorb an Album

Some of my album reviews have not been as good lately. That is to say, they are not as well written as the reviews I did when I was still in High School. Tonight I figured out why: It's a lot harder to absorb an album now than then.

In High School, absorbing an album, listening to the point that it becomes etched in my memory, that I know how it is structured and so on, only took about three listens. Nowadays, I have to do that five times or more. Living far away from school spoiled me.

In High School, I had a commute that was long enough to listen to an entire album, as well as revisit some of the songs I particularly liked. Having already listened to the album the night before, I had an understanding of it after 24 hours.

Now I live on campus and I can only get about two songs in before I get to my first class (this is particularly frustrating). So more often than not, I end up listening to parts of the album over and over again, while other parts go unheard.

I've figured that the only way around this is to take a train or bus for an hour (now is not important), except I don't really have anywhere to go.

On the other hand, it's only a matter of time before there's somewhere else I have to be.
