Contra - A Review

When did enjoyability stop being part of the quality of an album? When Vampire Weekend's first album came out, it was generally accepted that they sounded good, yet were rejected wholesale as part of the twee Williamsburg culture.

Perhaps to avoid that stigma, perhaps to satisfy their own intellectual needs, the aforementioned band released Contra, intended to be a response to The Clash's equally troubled 1980 release, Sandinista!

The trouble with these reviews is that I'm just as much a consumer as the rest of you, and without early access can't determine whether I'll like this album in the near future. The plain fact is that with Contra, Vampire Weekend is going further down the Paul Simon-Graceland rabbit hole, but with less tact. Some of the tracks are off-puttingly slow, while very few stand out. At a time when Rock music is floundering, and New Wave Revival is it's last hope, Ezra Koenig and company are taking a big risk, and whatever payoff it has will come from other, newer bands.

~UPDATE~ To quote Ashley Macquarrie, "Yeah, it's really boring."
