The Summer Winter Replacement: Firefly

When I watched the pilot, I realized that there was no sound in space and I thought, thank God.

That's just the kind of care and attention to detail that Joss Whedon is known for, and perhaps there was no better outlet for his creative energy than Firefly. As I dutifully explained to my cousin, "It's like Star Trek but with sex and money and libertarian underpinnings. It's dark and funny and semi-realistic!" This is different from regular science fiction; Whedon's future doesn't feel like a fantasy, people talk and act like us, just a little different.

The story of Firefly's cancellation is just like anything else on Fox: pre-emption, out-of-order airing, etc. And that allowed the producers to get away with a lot of things. Ultimately, with Serenity, the show manages a well-paced and logical conclusion. Whedon still says that the cancellation still haunts him, but while that battle, like Serenity Valley, has been lost, only a dao dan gui like him would have had the balls to start it.

Up next: Pushing Daisies

Firefly: one of the ... Best. Series. Ever. Cut short far too quickly. Make sure you catch Serenity, the follow-up movie, too.

I knew that I would need to, so I waited until Serenity to do the write-up. Shame about the show.
